Because sometimes in the hurt that is when we are closest to Him

When reading this please keep in mind that pieces of this have been written over the last several weeks as we walk and heal and more importantly, as we hope.

I have been trying to write about all that happened in the end with the boys but to be honest to go there means letting my heart feel them, smell them, hear them laugh, see their smiles and feel their heads fall on my chest. To do that causes my chest to start to cave in and I want to run – run to a place where the hurt can’t come.

My head lowers and tears start to flow when I remember watching Pete slowly buckle them in the car seats on that last day. Watching him kiss them softly on the cheeks and say goodbye. I just stood there in the cold air trying not to lose it – we had made it seem so exciting for the boys so it wouldn’t be hard for them. I remember turning around and seeing Pete watch the car until it was out of sight and walking into the house and having Pete pull me close. I remember sobbing with him and then he spent the next couple of hours putting everything away. I didn’t want to see the crib, I didn’t want to smell their blankets and see the toys. We boxed up all the clothes and put them into the attic.

Pete went back to work and I went to pick up Anders from kindergarten. Anders crawled up into the car and looked around for the boys. Again my head lowered and I quietly told him that they were gone. He buckled in his car seat and without missing a beat said “Mom, God is not going to forget us and He is not going to forget them and even if we have to do this again – if another baby comes and has to leave God knows what family they are supposed to be in. Mom, remember that Jesus is ALWAYS good. Just remember that.” He looked forward and rested fully in a God who doesn’t forget, who works all for good – even when it doesn't seem to make sense.

For the next week I held on to Anders’ faith because mine was sinking. I held on with all I had to a faith of a five year old. He didn’t need reasons why this had happened he just knew it had and that we would make it through it.

I ended up helping with Orphan Sunday at our church a couple weeks ago which I wasn’t supposed to help with this year but someone got sick so reluctantly I agreed and two really excited families came up to introduce me to their sons who had joined their families through adoption this past year. Both said “we are so glad we saw you – you were such an encouragement to our families to adopt and we wanted you to meet our new additions.” I smiled and then when they left motioned to Pete that I needed to go. We got in the car and I, with a not so quiet voice said, “Are you kidding me? I just put two boys in a car and watched them drive away. Come on Lord – just a small break from the hurt would be nice.“ But I knew that I also needed to see the joy that comes with adoption – I still needed to find the hope in the pain. As we drove off Pete held my hand and said. “Right now I don’t love the process of adoption but I do still believe that adoption is part of God’s plan for our family.” So we will continue on with the journey – walking in faith. Walking with hope. Looking towards our heavenly Father and waiting on His plan. Trusting that He will be faithful and even though we don’t know what that will look like we know that He will hold us through it and that in itself is amazing.

Through this God has been more real, more present, more mighty. While He is always there and always those things the hurt had put me in a place where I had to take the time to just sit and be with Him - to keep going I had to lean on Him. The hurt was so strong and my heart was so tired that to function I needed to be fully in His presence.

Just recently I went in to tuck in Ella and I said “Ella it is pretty hard to fall asleep with your eyes open.” I smiled and then I saw her eyes were sad. So I cuddled in next to her and she said “Mom, I’m just talking to God about the boys.” We talked about how God is the best to talk to when our hearts are hurting and that sometimes our earthly moms and dads can get busy but God is never too busy to hear our hearts. She looked up and quietly said, “Mom, I am trying to hear His voice but I only keep hearing mine.” I silently prayed “God be loud – let her hear You through her pain. Show her Your joy and peace. Use this hurt in her heart for Your glory and Your glory alone.” May that be our prayer always!

People ask would we do it again – yeah. We knew going in that this was a legal risk placement. We went into this in prayer, we walked through it with prayer and we will continue to pray. We are holding on to the One who never lets us go and man that is awesome! From Psalm 31:14-15 But I am trusting you, O Lord, saying “You are my God!” My future is in your hands.

Everyday Lord it is You I live for…

I will not boast in anything

No gifts, no power, no wisdom

But I will boast in Jesus Christ

His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?

I cannot give an answer

But this I know with all my heart

His wounds have paid my ransom

When it's time to say goodbye

We have a goodbye coming. We don't know when - we don't know the plan. Not even sure if there is a plan but we know it is coming. Every time the phone rings I think is this it - the call that says the goodbye is near. We have little hearts that are sad and hearts that are too young to understand. We are offering out lots of hugs even though most of the day is spent with my heart in my throat. We smile and fight back tears and we hold on to our God who is holding this situation. We don't know the whys and don't need them. We know the journey will continue and we will get through this and continue to walk it with joy. Sometimes it is when the hurt comes that we see God the clearest.

O love that will not let me go, I rest my weary soul in Thee.

Come By Here

  • Shaun Groves - Come By Here
  • The orphans shout for a loving father
  • And the whores reach out for a faithful lover
  • We’re all singing now
  • God, will you come by here?
  • The widows need life to raise the dead and
  • All the beggars plead for their daily bread
  • Oh, we’re all singing please
  • God, will you come by here?
  • Come, we have nothing else God
  • And having You we want for nothing
  • CHORUS
  • Come, come and meet us here
  • Come and touch our tears
  • That we may weep no more
  • Come, come and meet our pain
  • Come and lift our lame
  • That we may limp no more
  • Come that we may want no more
  • The doubters pray for your signs and wonders
  • All the cynics say You’ll let us go under
  • But we’re here to stay
  • God, will you come by here?
  • Come, we have nothing else God
  • And having You we want for nothing
  • CHORUS
  • No death, life
  • Angels or demons
  • No depth, height
  • Can come in between us
  • And Your love, Your love, Your love, love

    sometimes the old is best

    Wherefore I say unto thee,

    Her sins, which are many, are forgiven;

    for she loved much.

I read this verse today at the end of a post at www.aholyexperience.com and it just begged to be read in the bible. I'm not sure what about it called out for the old familiar pages of the book I so love but it just didn't seem to do it justice to use my ipod to pull up the surrounding passages. I just longed for the feeling and sound of the delicate pages of a well loved and used bible. Those tissue paper like pages, some bent slightly from catching tears. Some passages nearly invisible from being highlighted and underlined over and over. Sometimes the quick and lazy way isn't best; sometimes there is just something about searching through the pages. Finding the spot and tracing your fingers over it - taking it all in. Letting it fall over you like a cool shower after a long hot run. There is beauty to be held. Beauty to be seen.

    The "whys"

In the last couple of weeks I have witnessed two friends fight cancer. Both are amazing women of faith - both were surrounded by friends and family who prayed and believed in healing. One was healed here on earth and one was finally set free from her pain in heaven. I don't know why and I guess when it comes down to it I don't need to know. I think sometimes we look for answers and God gives them and other times they just don't seem to be there. I guess when it comes down to it do I need to really know the "whys" or should I just be willing to obey?

As parents we strive to explain to our kids the "whys" of obeying but there are times when the reasons are just too big for them to handle and they have to learn to just trust. I look at this picture and I can hear her laugh. Her marriage was strong, her kids have a heart for God and she believed in prayer even when she knew it wasn't the end she thought it would be.

Romans 14:8 For if we live, we live to honor the Lord; and if we die, we die to honor the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

    Let it blow

This weekend brought a windstorm. There was one gust that came flying through the area behind our backyard, cracked a tree in half and then blew open our back door and the back door to our garage. The gust was so powerful it blew open the hatch doors on both our attic doors in the garage and house. It needed a way to get out so it decided to use our garage door as its exit strategy - the bad news is that it wasn't open. It pushed the double door completely out and sent the wheels on the track into the driveway. I instantly thought of the cost, even if our insurance covers it there is still the whole deductible part. Well my husband saw beyond that and as we prayed together that evening he thanked God for showing us a small glimpse of His awesome power. Ah, to be humbled...

    Modern Day Job

Sometimes it can just be hard to breathe. You know the breathing that comes after a middle of the night phone call or test results that are the worst case scenario. The breath that comes when there just aren't words that bring comfort. But what if you look at it as in the story of Job from the bible. What if the trials being given you are because God says "hey Satan want see who can handle it? Want to see who will keep their faith? Go ahead. In fact, from it will come even more glory." Nobody wants to be Job - heck, not even his best buddies wanted to be him - his wife told him basically give up. But what if you are today's Job... how will your story end?

I've watched some amazing friends go through some pretty hard stuff and they have kept walking faith in hand and Savior by their side and isn't that what it is all about.

Sometimes we are just in it to pray...

We were recently matched with a birthmother but at the last minute the little guy was not meant to be ours. Our hearts are grieving - my heart is searching to make sense of all of it but I know that of all the families waiting God chose us to pray. He chose us knowing that in the end there would be heart break. The ending is not what anyone was expecting but while it is an ending in worldly terms it isn't when it comes to my faith. I will forever pray for this little guy and this birthmother and the woman who has come to parent him. I will pray that he would not only live but thrive. I will pray that he will grow to not just know God's love but to feel it. That God's love, His unconditional love, will consume him. That when God calls he will run; not walk but run.

God knew this would end in pain but He still felt that of all the families waiting our faith could make it through this. We are stronger for it and we will not lose hope. My prayer is that every child finds a family that longs for them, that prays in earnest for them, that believes in them. A family that runs when they call out in the night. I am a parent that believes in faith and grace and forgiveness. I believe that when life gets hard we have a savior who knows our pain, who holds us as we cry, who not only sees each tear that falls but wipes them from our cheeks. My hope is built in Christ and I love that. He will not leave me nor forsake me. I'm not sure how much more my "mom" heart can handle but I know that I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. So we will keep waiting and praying and hoping...

    While I'm waiting
    by John Waller
    I'm waiting
    I'm waiting on You, Lord
    And I am hopeful
    I'm waiting on You, Lord
    Though it is painful
    But patiently, I will wait

I will move ahead, bold and confident
    Taking every step in obedience
    While I'm waiting
    I will serve You
    While I'm waiting
    I will worship
    While I'm waiting
    I will not faint
    I'll be running the race
    Even while I wait

    I'm waiting
    I'm waiting on You, Lord
    And I am peaceful
    I'm waiting on You, Lord
    Though it's not easy
    But faithfully, I will wait
    Yes, I will wait
I will serve You while I'm waiting
I will worship while I'm waiting
I will serve You while I'm waiting
I will worship while I'm waiting
I will serve you while I'm waiting
I will worship while I'm waiting on You, Lord

    How great is our God

Sometimes when life takes us on twists and turns and we don't know where to stand or even if we have the strength to stand it is nice to be reminded of how great God is...

    Promise to Try

Mother's Day is so different when you become a family through adoption. You have the honor and privilege of sharing that day with another women who has had a huge part in your little one's life...

    "Promise To Try"

Little girl don't you forget her face
    Laughing away your tears
When she was the one who felt all the pain

Little girl never forget her eyes
    Keep them alive inside
I promise to try -- it's not the same

Keep your head held high -- ride like the wind
Never look behind, life isn't fair
That's what you said, so I try not to care

Little girl don't run away so fast
I think you forgot to kiss -- kiss her goodbye

Will she see me cry when I stumble and fall
Does she hear my voice in the night when I call
Wipe away all your tears, it's gonna be all right

I fought to be so strong, I guess you knew
I was afraid you'd go away, too

Little girl you've got to forget the past
    And learn to forgive me
I promise to try -- but it feels like a lie

Don't let memory play games with your mind
She's a faded smile frozen in time
I'm still hanging on -- but I'm doing it wrong
Can't kiss her goodbye -- but I promise to try

In the moment of my weakness

    None but Jesus
    Hillsong United

In the quiet, in the stillness
I know that You are God
In the secret of Your presence
I know there I am restored

When You call I won't refuse
Each new day again I'll choose

There is no one else for me
    None but Jesus
    Crucified to set me free
Now I live to bring Him praise

    In the chaos, in confusion
    I know You're sovereign still
In the moment of my weakness
You give me grace to do Your will

So when You call I won't delay
This my song through all my days

There is no one else for me
    None but Jesus
    Crucified to set me free
Now I live to bring Him praise

All my delight is in You, Lord
All of my hope, all of my strength
All my delight is in You, Lord, forevermore

Do you ever jump first then pray? Isn't it nice to know that in our weakness He is sovereign still...

This is what it means to be held

Sometimes it amazes me how often I just want what I want when I want it and expect to get it. If I just pray hard enough or read enough Christian books or worship more than my wishes will be granted. I picture God looking down and saying "Oh silly child wait on me, wait on me. For I know the plans I have for you - I see the whole thing. You see only a moment so wait. Breathe me in, hold on tight for the ride that is coming will be rough - it will have moments of amazing peace and joy but there will be times when your faith will be tested like never before. Where you will feel pain and loss but never will I leave you. You need this time to get to know me better, to fully firm your faith in me. To know what it truly means to run with me - to feel your feet running on solid ground while everything around you is shifting sand. To know what it feels like to be held...."

    In the still

The other day Sara was sad - just needed extra loves and hugs and sometimes being a mother of three finding that time can be hard. I had music on in the background and as I scooped Sara up and sat and rocked with her this song came on. I was reminded how much we miss in our relationship with God when we don't just stop and listen... And as Sara fell asleep in my arms the words

"Wait... this moment is too sweet

Would you please stay here with Me and love on Me a little longer" played.

Lord, I miss so many of those moments in the chaos of life. Thank you for the gentle reminder to just be still. To listen and take in all the giggles, and the joy, to dance and hand out hugs often. To let the tears come when they need to and to have a heart that is willing to run with a passion that follows hard after you.

    Brian And Jenn Johnson
    A Little Longer lyrics

What can I do for You?
What can I bring to You?
What kind of song would you like me to sing?

'Cause I'll dance a dance for You
Pour out my love to You
What can I do for You beautiful king?

'Cause I... can't thank You enough.
    I can't thank You enough
What can I do for You?
What can I bring to You?
What kind of song would you like me to sing?

'Cause I'll dance a dance for You
Pour out my love to You
What can I do for You beautiful king?

'Cause I... can't thank You enough.
    I can't thank You enough
All of the words that I find... and I can't thank You enough.
No matter I try... I can't thank You enough.
Then I hear You sing to me

"you... don't have to do a thing
Just simply be with me and let those things go
'Cause they can wait another minute

Wait... this moment is too sweet
Would you please stay here with Me
And love on Me a little longer"

    I hear You say...
"You... don't have to do a thing
Just simply be with me and let those things go
'Cause they can wait another minute

Wait... this moment is too sweet
Would you please stay here with Me
And love on Me a little longer
I'd love to be with you a little longer
'Cause I'm in love with you

    Bring it on

There is a quote by Napoleon BonaparteI (1769-1821) that goes: "Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and myself founded empires; but upon what foundation did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon force! But Jesus Christ founded His upon love; and at this hour millions of men would die for Him."

Last Friday I didn't agree with the way Sara's preschool teacher had handled a situation that involved Sara and following directions (and that is putting it nicely). Honestly, I was LIVID. You know that mama bear, shaking, spitting fire mad but I reminded myself that I have had countless training in this kind of situation so I found a place that was quiet, prayed and walked away for the weekend.

Then I thought about it all weekend. I let it take control over my thoughts, my sleep, my joy until I had had enough. I read the verse in my devotional time Sunday night that says "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord." So right then and there I gave it to the Lord - I prayed over and over that my words would be praise, that my discussion with the teacher would be different. That the relationship formed through the discussion would end in increased trust and a better partnership. I always feel it is best that when coming into a conflict you bring a solution so I did - and so with love and a lot of deep breathing I went into the day Monday morning. It went really well. Now if only I had read that devotional on Friday. = )

"On Christ the solid rock I stand all other ground is sinking sand..."

    Let my lifesong sing

We sing all the time in our family - in the car, in the house, before bed, to be silly, when we are sad, when we are rejoicing... I was listening to Sara Groves, one of my favorite artists, speak once and she said that until she got married she thought everyone sang in the car as a family. Um yeah - as soon as the doors shut on our purple grocery getter my whole family would sing. My dad or mom would start and Mary and I would jump in. Maybe throw in some harmony or start a round - we would just sing. When we were scared or sick or sad my mom would come in and sing this amazing song from Peter, Paul & Mary that sings the lines "I'll walk in the rain by your side, I'll cling to the warmth of your tiny hand, I'll whisper all the joys that are mine..." I still sing it to my kiddos.

I think because of that I feel closest to God in times of worship. Songs can energize me, humble me, change me, allow me to feel His presence. A lot of the time they become my prayer. So I pray that today and everyday my lifesong sings of my Savior. That I am a light, that I lift up my desires to Him and follow. That I don't look for the comfort but the end result. That my children see that I believe. That they see that God provides comfort in difficult times and rejoices with us in the good. That when we truly give our lives to Him there is honor in that, not fear. That He is always with us. Always, forever, no matter what.
